Developing the Teacher as Servant Leader within a Diverse and Global Context

The UNCG Teacher Education Fellows Program emphasizes servant leadership within a diverse and global context. As participants in this community of like-minded pre-service teachers, scholarship recipients will engage in teaching-related activities designed to develop and enhance their leadership abilities, commitment to the campus and broader community, and awareness of socio-cultural considerations from the individual to the global scale.

Scholarships

Due to the generosity of the Marian Franklin Scholarship, the Jacqueline W. & Jack H. Varner Scholarship, and the J. Barnwell & Mary Blair Allison Scholarship, participation in the UNCG Teacher Education Fellows Program includes scholarships of up to $20,000.00. Scholarship funds for tuition are distributed incrementally, with $3,500.00 distributed in the first year, $4,500.00 distributed in the second year, and $6,000.00 distributed in each of the last two years, as long as eligibility requirements are maintained.

Enrichment Opportunities

Development of global awareness, leadership, and civic responsibility will occur through engagement in a variety of activities funded in part through the generosity of the Sarah Cole Jordan endowment. These opportunities for an enriched professional and educational experience include:

• Early internships – Fellows will intern in the schools approximately two years before their peers outside of the program.
• Integrated seminars – Fellows will enroll in seminars that extend the content from the General Education Core of courses to the teaching profession and that are led by award-winning faculty in the School of Education.
• International experience – Fellows will spend a semester abroad in the sophomore year, during which time they will participate in school-based internships that allow for reflection on the similarities and differences between educational systems and cultures of the United States and other countries.
• Residential living – Fellows will live in relative proximity to one another as part of the Residential Colleges or Lloyd International Honors College during the first two years in the program.
• Networking events – Fellows will engage with educational leaders from the local, state, and national levels and will develop long-lasting bonds with a cohort of peers at UNCG and other campuses throughout the state.
• Community engagement – Fellows will develop and support initiatives designed to address the needs of the local community.
• Leadership development – Fellows will participate in professional conferences and workshops as well as structured leadership skill-building and will have opportunities to take on formal leadership roles within the School of Education.

Eligibility

Participation in the UNCG Teacher Education Fellows Program is open to incoming freshmen (and current students during 2017-2018) majoring in Elementary Education, Middle Grades Education, Special Education, and Dual (Elementary and Special) Education as well as majors in the College of Arts and Sciences with Secondary Education concentrations (i.e., Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, English, Geography, History, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology).
In order to be eligible for participation in the UNCG Teacher Education Fellows Program, students must meet the following criteria:

• Have at least a 3.80 cumulative high school GPA.
• Score a minimum of 1100 on the SAT (verbal and math) or 24 on the ACT composite.
• Have at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA at the end of the first semester at UNCG.
• Maintain a minimum 3.30 cumulative GPA by their sophomore year at UNCG.
• Achieve admission to Teacher Education by their junior year.
• Achieve admission to student teaching by their senior year.
• Participate in all required UNCG Teacher Education Fellows Program activities.

Teacher Education Requirements

Students enrolled in a teacher licensure program must apply to Teacher Education before moving forward in licensure and content courses. Requirements for acceptance into Teacher Education include:

• 3.0 UNCG cumulative grade point average
• Pass Praxis Core Academic Skills (or exemption through SAT/ACT scores)
• Clear/Satisfactory criminal background check
• Completion of the Teacher Education Admissions Application
• Completion of pre-requisite program requirements

Praxis Core Academic Skills

You may be exempt from all or part of the Core Academic Skills Exam through appropriate SAT/ACT scores. You may pass Core Academic Skills by meeting the minimum score in each category, or by meeting the minimum composite score of 468.
Students are still required to adhere to program admission deadlines.

Criminal Background Check

As a participant in the pre-service teacher licensure programs, you must have a clear or satisfactory criminal background check prior to beginning your first field experience course.

Apply

Interested students may apply for limited space in the UNCG Teacher Education Fellows program by completing the UNCG Teacher Education Fellows Application. Priority will be given to applications received by January 1.
