Ashby College, founded in 1970, is the oldest residential college in North Carolina. We foster a living-learning, holistic academic community grounded in liberal education, critical thinking, and contemporary media literacies. We value faculty-student interactions and emphasize small-seminar classes that meet UNCG General Education Requirements (GEC). Self-governing activities encourage students to integrate and apply knowledge to societal challenges and implement projects that foster personal development, innovation, leadership, and civic engagement.
The program is intended to challenge students to think critically and systematically about a variety of relevant issues and to link their academic fields to societal challenges. In particular, Ashby Core courses ask students to expand their understanding of literacy and its role in the global contexts in which they live. Expanding literacy to include sonic, visual, gestural, along with verbal written and oral discourse, helps students to recognize, with intentionality, how they interpret and create images, sounds and words. As the last piece of the Ashby Core Curriculum, students in their Capstone course will present a thoughtful argument in a self-designed and produced digital portfolio that represents the culmination of their Ashby curricular and co-curricular experience.
