Graduate Teaching Fellows
The University Teaching and Learning Commons is excited to announce a new opportunity for graduate students at UNCG. The Graduate Teaching Fellow position is an opportunity for graduate students to explore, develop, and teach a course as part of the UNCG Residential Colleges General Education curriculum. Participating students will be paired with a distinguished faculty mentor in the area of equity, diversity, and inclusion. The faculty mentor will assist the student in the exploration, development, and teaching of courses incorporating equity, diversity, and inclusion with content from the student’s respective discipline.
Selected Graduate Teaching Fellows will be expected to:
- Participate in monthly workshops and training related to developing an inclusive classroom, incorporating equity and diversity in the curriculum, and the role of the faculty in facilitating a just learning space.
- Meet with their faculty mentor regularly to explore the challenges, benefits, and importance of teaching equity and diversity.
- Work with the Teaching Innovations Office on the production of a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) project to be shared with campus.
- Develop a teaching portfolio including: teaching philosophy statements, sample assignments, sample syllabi, and diversity statement.
Fall:
- Develop a 100/200 level general education course to be taught in spring in UNCG’s Residential Colleges.
- Meet with the UTLC to complete the development of their respective course designs.
- Coordinate with the Residential Colleges Office scheduling of spring course assignments.
Spring:
- Teach a 100/200 level general education course in the UNCG Residential Colleges.
- Meet with the UTLC to debrief the teaching experience and further develop their teaching profile.
- Meet with their faculty mentor regularly to explore the challenges, benefits, and importance of teaching equity and diversity.
UNCG’s Residential Colleges:
The Residential Colleges (RCs) are curricular and co-curricular academic communities designed around high-impact practices and populated by first- and second-year students who live together in a residence hall and take a common core of general education courses, with a capstone experience around a particular concept such as digital communication (Ashby RC), professionalism (Grogan RC), or sustainability (Strong RC). Having been a part of the UNCG academic community since 1970, these innovative living-learning environments offer a full slate of General Education courses in addition to a series of Core courses that speak to and engage with a key concept that frames the curricular and co-curricular programming in each RC. The Residential College model is founded on the idea that students who engage with faculty, take classes together in small communities, and connect their intellectual and academic experiences to their lives and communities have a better chance at thriving in college, while learning to explore new ideas and asking how that knowledge might benefit others.
Compensation:
Selected Graduate Teaching Fellows will be compensated with a stipend totaling no more than $2,000, half to be paid in the fall and half to be paid in the spring.
