Ashby Residential College

Welcome to Ashby College! Here you are a member of a community that offers great classes, faculty support, and opportunities to make new friends during our project events. We have been a residential college since 1970. Our mission since the beginning has been focused on student self-governance and social justice. Given the media-driven reality of the world we live in we have also turned our attention toward contemporary media literacies.

An inclusive two-year program, Ashby is a co-ed student community with approximately 120 freshmen and sophomores with a handful of of Upper-Class Mentors. The Ashby experience provides you with a small liberal arts college environment within a large, public university, including immediate and complete access to the diverse facilities, programs, and departments of a larger university. Ashby encourages innovative study, offers small classes, a unity of academic and social experiences, and close student-faculty contacts.

Innovative Classes

The RCs offer unique courses that are only open to fellow RCers. Ashby’s Core courses thread together course material from your Gen Ed classes with cultural social justice questions of the day with the ways we approach the world through the lens of contemporary media that influences how we make meaning. Course titles have included Zombies, Dark Web, Hollywood and History, Fairy Tales, and King Arthur and Grail Literature.

Life in Ashby

Social connections outside of class are the connective tissue in Ashby College. Starting with a long list of traditions, such as the Valle Crucis retreat in the NC mountains, Haunted House, Foustgiving, Foustercon and Foustock. Our traditions, along with other project committees are student run and lead. Faculty leadership supports and guides, but Ashby is what students make of it. Your voice matters here.

About Ashby

Located in Mary Foust Residence Hall, Ashby emphasizes cross-disciplinary connections and communication within small-seminar classes as well as larger classes. Students are offered priority access to an in-house academic program—approximately 18 courses every semester—which focuses primarily on fulfilling students’ UNCG General Education Curriculum (GEC) requirements. Founded in 1970 by the Dean of Arts and Sciences Robert Miller and Professor of Philosophy Warren Ashby, the Residential College was modeled loosely after British universities. Miller’s and Ashby’s pioneering and visionary ideals created a community with a strong connection between liberal studies and community life, where residents make connections beyond proximity and major. Today, Ashby College is among the oldest continually operating living-learning communities in the United States and the oldest at UNCG and in the state of North Carolina.
